The Roman Association of Watercolor Artists (ARA) presents the 2017 Watercolor Art Contest “Cities in Transformation: Ettore Roesler Franz” (The Contest). On the occasion of the 110th anniversary of his death, the Association honors this important artist who, through his watercolor series “Vanished Rome”, has contributed notably to the awareness and conservation of images of Rome before its transformation to the Capital of Italy.

This choice of theme is not designed to nostalgically remember the past, but rather to examine the deep processes of urban transformation taking place in other cities of the world. The matter is of great interest also to the United Nations, which held a conference regarding this subject in October 2016, entitled Habitat III.

Cities are the central focus of sustainable development and at the same time the crossroads of contradiction regarding cultural, social, environmental, economic, and institutional aspects. The solution to these problems, for better or worse, will determine the quality of life of millions of people worldwide.

The watercolor artists, taking inspiration from the special technique and the message of Ettore Roesler Franz, can contribute in an important way by documenting, with their own contemporary artistic interpretations, the various developments of urban realities around the world.
